GSWS honors Marge Chavooshian

We at the Garden State Watercolor Society are presenting Marge Chavooshian, longtime member with our 1st Emeritus Award for her wonderful service to the GSWS and the arts community of NJ:

The Garden State Watercolor Society will be honoring long time Trenton resident, Marge Chavooshian with the 1st Emeritus Award for her long and outstanding service to the GSWS and the arts community in New Jersey.  The award will be presented at the Reception for the 43rd Annual Juried Exhibition scheduled for October 13, 2012 from 4pm-6pm at the historic Prallsville Mills, Stockton, NJ.  At the Reception you will be able to meet and greet Marge!

During her student years, Marge studied at the Art Students League with both Reginald Marsh (drawing) and Mario Cooper (watercolor).  She began her career as a commercial and design artist, but soon turned to her love of watercolors and her passion for painting old and historic buildings, street scenes, facades, cityscapes and the people who inhabit these spaces.  Marge is a plein air painter and her paintings shine with luminous detail, geometrical shapes and sunlight.

Marge is one of the founding members of the GSWS (1972) and became the Historian in 1990. So for many years Marge has kept scrapbooks full of newspaper articles, newsletters and photos about the GSWS.  Marge has also contributed to the arts community and the GSWS by giving demonstrations, Gallery walks of  shows, concrete advice and mentoring to aspiring artists.  She has been a fixture at the Chalfonte Hotel, Cape May, NJ where she gives workshops spring, summer and fall.  Her work has been highlighted in publications such as American Artist magazine, Best in WatercolorPlaces in Watercolor, and Landscape Inspirations.

Chavooshian is a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, the New Jersey Water Color Society, and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society. Marge is listed in five different who’s who, including Who’s Who in American Art. Her works are in many public and private collections in the USA, Canada, France, Portugal, Italy, England, and Germany.

Marge is now living in New York state, nearer her daughter and family. Her ties to Trenton and Mercer County run deep.  Ellarslie, the Trenton City Museum, is especially grateful to Marge, for all she has contributed.  One can view many of her wonderful paintings at the museum

Marge loves to travel and paint what she sees and experiences.  For many years she traveled the world with her husband, Budd Chavooshian (long time NJ State employee, at the Planning and Zoning Department). Marge’s daughter Nora is a sculptor and set designer married to the actor Joe Morton. Marge is a joyful grandma and now—great grandmother.

We at the GSWS wish Marge many more years of painting and inspiration!  The GSWS is proud to honor our longtime member, Marge Chavooshian.
